Critical Literacy: the ability to read texts in an active, reflective manner in order to better understand power, inequality, and the injustice in human relationship. (Coffey, 2015)
Teaching how texts works allows students to understand what it is trying to perceive (Coffey, 2015). In the 21st century the growth of the internet has allowed anyone and everyone’s opinions within hands reach. Part of critical literacy is also being aware that some opinions hold more weight than others; some opinions are truer than others and some are just completely irrelevant (Luke, 2015). Which is why in the 21st century students must be aware of the power texts holds and how it can be used against them to manipulate not only their thoughts as well as their views.
As Allan Luke (2015) summed up perfectly, these children will need to engage with this debate as they will be living with the consequences made. So is it not important that the future be able to find the truth within the different versions presented to them. They must learn and understand the relationship between representation and presentation verses those of reality (Luke, 2015). Yes, scepticism is a wonderful thing, however, it is important that critical literacy is NOT taught as everything is a mirror, or a misrepresentation where nothing is real but as critical and constructive scepticism (Luke, 2015).
